Tras el rumor del que se hizo eco Donald Trump durante el debate con Kamala Harris la noche de este martes de que varios haitianos «devoran» gatos en un estado de Estados Unidos, la canciller de Haití, Dominique Dupuy, manifestó que no es la primera vez que sus compatriotas son víctimas de una campaña de mentiras y de información falsa destinada a desacreditarlos al servicio de intereses políticos.
La funcionaria pidió a los haitianos unirse «para decir, con una sola voz, que somos humanos».
La canciller también publicó un comunicado en el que expresó su gran preocupación tras las declaraciones discriminatorias de varios políticos estadounidenses contra los haitianos en la diáspora, particularmente aquellos que viven en Springfield, Ohio.
La ministra haitiana en el exterior informó que se reunió el martes 10 de septiembre con más de 50 líderes comunitarios, religiosos y jefes de organizaciones que trabajan con migrantes en estas zonas y en otros lugares de Estados Unidos.
La reunión virtual, que se celebró con la participación de Nikita Séjour, asesora del primer ministro, tuvo como objetivo mostrar la solidaridad con la comunidad afectada y definir juntos la respuesta adecuada a estos ataques.
«Queremos no sólo expresar nuestra solidaridad, sino también enviar una señal clara de que rechazamos enérgicamente estas declaraciones que atacan la dignidad de nuestros compatriotas y pueden poner en peligro sus vidas», indicó.
Junto con las organizaciones de la diáspora, el Ministerio de Exterior está evaluando todas las estrategias posibles para ayudar a los haitianos víctimas de actos de intimidación y estigmatización, en Springfield o en otros lugares, a obtener la protección de las autoridades competentes.
La entidad promueve todas las iniciativas legales destinadas a defender los derechos de los inmigrantes haitianos.
